Brushing before bed could promote dental health

We all do it. After a long day of work, business meetings, lunches, kissing and munching on sweets, we get home, utterly exhausted. Most of us do our homely duties and once we plop down onto the couch at night, we fall asleep.

And we don’t give our teeth a second thought.


Well, scientists say that it is risky…

Risky and pretty disgusting.

The inside of your mouth is literally a breeding ground for germs. Think of it as a wet, warm place for microscopic animals to grow and breed.

American Dental Association spokesperson says; “In the middle of the day, [run your tongue] across your teeth right around the gum line. You’ll find something sticky or fuzzy. Brushing disrupt[s] that bacteria so it doesn’t stay in place”.

She told Huff Post that, because if left in place, it starts to attack your teeth. Plus, the longer that plaque sits in one place, the more likely it is to become tartar, “that hard, yellow, rough material you sometimes feel in between your teeth” that can cause inflammation and bleeding in the gums, she says.

“At night the saliva flow is reduced tremendously and saliva is a natural lubricant. It flushes things away from the teeth,” says Mazen Natour, professor of periodontology and implant dentistry at the NYU College of Dentistry.

“By having saliva at a reduced flow at night, things tend to stick easier and faster.” Natour continued in an article on Vice, that if you’re only brushing in the daytime, you’ve got a lot of hours and meals between brushing for plaque to build up on your teeth. “As a personal opinion, if you really want to choose to brush once a day, I would say [brush] at night.”

To be honest, cavities really hurt. Those holes in your back teeth suddenly send surges of pain through your whole body whenever you try to eat something with even a gram of sugar content.

  1. Our mouths are bombarded throughout the course of the day with a variety of environments. It could range from an acidic, hot cup of coffee in the morning to that pen you chewed on while sitting in a meeting at work.
  2. Plaque is acidic, and given time, will exert its damage onto the teeth and gums. So by brushing multiple times per day, and especially just before bed, we are cutting down on the risk of damage to our teeth and gums from this harmful plaque.


  1. Sleep time Causes A Dry Mouth. It is normal that as we sleep our mouths produce less saliva. Hence, why we tend to be thirsty first thing in the morning. A dry mouth is the perfect breeding ground for plaque bacteria. This can lead to increased tooth decay and even the development of periodontal disease.
  2. Preventing Periodontal Disease. As mentioned above, removing plaque and bacteria from the mouth will significantly reduce bacterial damage to your teeth and gums. The same plaque that can cause tooth decay can also be prevalent in periodontal disease. Once periodontal disease progresses, it is very difficult to treat and control. It can lead to teeth shifting, receding gum tissue, and even tooth loss.
