Prices and more in SA Dentistry

In South Africa, the cost of a general check-up at a dentist ranges between R300 and R500. It depends on the location of the practice.

The procedures performed, the technology used, and the support staff needed all influence your pay rate.

There are many dental procedures, but five are more common than others. According to Family Choice Dental, a general dentist can perform one of the five treatments to fix one dental problem.

Teeth Whitening

South Africans are spending up to R5500 to whiten their teeth. The procedure includes chemicals. The chemicals remove stains and discolouration on teeth enamel. It is considered safe for people with teeth sensitivity. Teeth sensitivity is one of the most significant complaints patients have.

The dreaded root canal

Root canals are priced from R900 upwards. Root canal treatment is a restorative dental procedure, in which the infected pulp of a tooth is removed – to result in the elimination of infection and the protection of the decontaminated tooth from future microbial invasion, Wikipedia explains.

A dental deep cleaning treatment includes dental scaling and root planning. Dentists usually divide the work they do on the patient’s mouth into four quadrants. They clean one quadrant per visit—the treatment averages between R10000 and R16000. The cost is affected by the extent of the treatment.

Dental fillings close holes and cavities and mask up mild to moderate tooth decay. In addition, the fillings repair injured teeth – particularly fractured teeth. Dental restorations may vary from R500 to around R6 500.

According to WebMD,   to treat a cavity, your dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then “fill” the area on the tooth where the decayed material was.

Fillings also repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth worn down from misuse (such as from nail-biting or tooth grinding).

A toothache is usually a sign of cavities and cracks. The dentist will check for these first. Then, they will examine your tooth by taking X-rays. The cost of an X-ray can start from R350. The dentist will fix the tooth if the X-ray shows that it needs filling.

First, the dentist will numb your tooth. Next, the dentist will use a drill to remove any decayed dental tissue. Then, before sealing the tooth with a feeling, the dentist will clean the tooth with water.

The patient can choose the filling they want. For example, you can choose between gold, silver, porcelain or dental resin fillings.

Dental crowns

Dental crowns repair badly damaged teeth. The teeth are usually damaged by decay or injury. Dental crowns are a form of restoration. They can cost anywhere from R3000.

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped “caps” placed over your tooth. Think of it as a snug hat for your tooth, says Cleveland Clinic. The crown restores the tooth’s shape, size, strength and appearance.

Dentists cement the dental crown into place on your tooth, and it covers the visible portion of the tooth.

A dental crown can save your damaged teeth from being extracted. They also correct cosmetic imperfections. It takes two dental appointments to complete the crowning. They manufacture crowns in a dental laboratory. Some dentists make their crowns.

Crowns protect the restored teeth from further infection or damage.

Tooth extractions

Only if the dentist cannot save it, he or she will extract a decayed tooth. The tooth would have tried to push beyond the gum but failed. A wisdom tooth is removable if it is troublesome. It is painful.

Tooth extractions price from R350. The dentist usually extracts a troubled tooth under the gum with minor oral surgery.

Dental implants

Dental implants can cost between R20000 and R200000. Implants replace natural teeth in the best and permanent way. It involves minor oral surgery. The surgery includes placement of the implant into your jawbone.

The process takes a few months and several procedures to complete. The result is permanent artificial teeth. Implant-supported crowns and dentures are very realistic looking.

Braces position your teeth to make them aesthetically pleasing and easy to clean. They correct bad bites, which make eating difficult and will have you struggling to talk properly.

People under 18 years old wear braces to align their teeth. Labial (regular braces) range between R15500 and R31000. Lingual braces cost between R30000 and R51 500—aligners price from R30000 up to R51500. There is an additional upfront appliance fee between R10000 and R35000.
