Periodontal disease refers to any disease around the teeth and gums. It is a disease that affects the structures of the mouth, teeth and jawbone, as well as structures around the teeth, including the gums, the cementum that covers the root, the periodontal ligament and the alveolar bone. Also, random salt water rinses can help keep the mouth clean during the day, between brushes. This is best after food or sugary snacks and drinks have been consumed. Sugar is great food for bacteria.
Recently, gum disease has been linked to a number of other health problems. This means that a large part of the prevention is also maintaining an all-around healthy lifestyle and diet. Eat loads of fruits and vegetables and drinking plenty of water. In addition, do moderate exercise.
Smoking and drinking alcohol also negatively affect your oral health, so be sure to do these in moderation, if at all.
Floss daily, and be sure to remove as much plaque and residue as possible from the teeth.
Make sure to get regular check-ups with your dentist. Usually, once every six months is preferred, as well as the occasional professional cleaning for the harder-to-reach places inside the mouth.
Because periodontal disease is caused by bacteria, your dentist can prescribe you an antibiotic. You may also experience a bit of discomfort if your periodontal disease is at an advanced stage, so you can take over-the-counter pain medication to ease it.
