Treating sensitive teeth at home

Having sensitive teeth can impact your quality of life. It affects eating habits, speech and other activities. It can really put a damper on your life.

Desensitising toothpaste

Desensitising toothpaste has a compound that can shield your irritable nerve endings. The most active ingredient is potassium nitrate. It is a compound that blocks pain signals. The pain signals travel from a nerve in your tooth to your brain. 

The sensitivity will decrease after using the toothpaste a few times. Dentists suggest a soft-bristle toothbrush and low-acid or fluoride mouth rinses. 

Saltwater rinse

Salt is an effective antiseptic that reduces inflammation. You can alleviate pain symptoms by gargling with salt water twice a day. 

Add salt to a glass of lukewarm water and mix. Rinse your mouth for 30 seconds, and then spit it out. It will reduce sensitivity and pain.

Guava

Guava is actually known to possess flavonoids like quercetin, kaempferol and rutin. All that have anti-inflammatory properties to help relieve tooth sensitivity and pain. You can chew on a few leaves for about 2-3 minutes and spit them out before you rinse your mouth. If you do not want to chew them, put four to five leaves into a pan with a cup of water and bring it to a boil. Add a sprinkle of salt and use it as a mouthwash.

Hydrogen peroxide

This peroxide is a mild antiseptic and disinfectant. They are commonly used to sterilise cuts, burns and other wounds to prevent infection. Peroxide is also a mouth rinse. According to Healthline, the rinse will heal your gums and prevent inflammation.

Add hydrogen peroxide to equal parts of warm water. Swish the solution in your mouth for about 30 seconds, and then spit it out. You can rinse your mouth with water afterwards. The rinse will remove any remaining hydrogen peroxide. 

Honey and warm water

Honey is an antibacterial agent. It cleans wounds. Honey speeds up your healing process. It also reduces pain, swelling and inflammation. 

Try rinsing your mouth with warm water and a spoonful of honey. It will encourage oral healing. 

Turmeric

Turmeric is not only a cooking spice. It has anti-inflammatory properties too. Turmeric hosts a compound called curcumin. Curcumin is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used for treatments of Ayurvedic, digestive orders and enhances wound healing.  

To alleviate pain from sensitive teeth, massage turmeric on your teeth. You can also make a topical paste from turmeric, salt and mustard oil. The paste should be applied to your teeth and gums twice a day for pain relief.

Green tea

Green tea is popular because of its health benefits. Studies show the antioxidant effect in green tea, and its anti-inflammatory properties can help your oral health.

Sensitive teeth require unsweetened green tea as a mouthwash. It can strengthen your teeth and reduce inflammation if used twice a day.

Capsaicin

This compound can be found in chilli peppers and other hot peppers. Capsaicin is the reason peppers are spicy. It has analgesic properties and can be used to treat burning mouth syndrome by reducing pain and inflammation. 

Capsaicin is also a topical gel for sensitive teeth. It can be used as a mouth rinse too. After continued use, Capsaicin will reduce pain symptoms. 

Vanilla extract

Vanilla extract is antiseptic and relieves pain. It can treat teething babies who are in pain and feel extreme discomfort.

Pour vanilla extract onto a cotton ball. Apply the cotton ball to your gums for a few minutes. To treat sensitive, repeat the process as often as you need to.

Prevention

Home remedies temporarily relieve pain symptoms for people with sensitive teeth. There are ways to prevent damaging your teeth. Try to maintain good oral hygiene. Keep your teeth and mouth clean by using a softer toothbrush. A softer toothbrush can prevent irritation and abrasions. 

Limit your daily intake of acidic foods and beverages because they dissolve your tooth enamel. Schedule frequent dental appoints. If you grind your teeth at night, use a mouthguard.
