What are dental implants?

If you have ever lost a permanent tooth, especially in the front of your mouth, you may have considered an implant at some point.

There are many alternatives to replacing a tooth, or filling a large gap between one’s teeth. Dental implants has been one of the more popular options.

But what is a dental implant?

Well, an implant is a permanent solution to missing teeth, that isn’t removable, like dentures.

Colgate explains; a dental implant is a titanium post (like a tooth root) that is surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gum line that allows your dentist to mount replacement teeth or a bridge into that area.

The process of fusing an implant with bone, called osseointegration, involves connecting the implant with a component called an abutment that supports the crown.

An implant doesn’t come loose like a denture can. Dental implants also benefit general oral health because they do not have to be anchored to other teeth, like bridges.

Can anyone get dental implants?

Dentists will perform an eligibility test, to see whether or not your mouth can handle the implants, as well as the procedure to fit them.

Eligible candidates must have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. Children and the elderly may not be eligible candidates, solely due to the weak structure of the mouth. Patients who do not have enough bone height in the upper jaw or the sinuses are too close to the jaw, you may require a sinus lift.

You may also require a bone graft if your bone is too thin or soft.

According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), the long-term success rate for dental implants is 97 percent.

Implant dentists are concerned about both oral health and cosmetic outcomes. Replacing missing teeth helps regain a confident smile as well stay fit and healthy by maintaining good nutritional habits and eating health foods they previously were unable to chew, the AAID says.
