What is Invisalign and how does it work?

Invisalign has gained in popularity over the last few years with celebrities such as Billie Eilish openly wearing theirs, even smiling for paparazzi pictures while wearing it! But what is an Invisalign, exactly?

Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that helps to straighten teeth. It is an alternative method to the infamous metal braces. Invisalign involves wearing a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners that help shift your teeth into the proper position.

According to Colgate, Invisalign has quickly revolutionised the world of orthodontics. Now patients have a different option besides “ugly metal brackets”.

Unfortunately, Invisalign is a bit pricey compared to other teeth straightening methods.

How much do Invisalign braces cost?

According to the Invisalign Official Website, “As with other types of orthodontic treatment, only your Invisalign® System certified provider can determine the cost based on your clinical needs. Factors affecting the cost may include the complexity of your treatment, your treatment goals and treatment duration. Get in touch with an Invisalign System certified provider to get a more accurate cost estimate for your Invisalign treatment.”

Prices start at the R20 000 mark.

What does it look like?

Unlike the wire look of braces, Invisalign covers the entire surface area of the teeth, much like a mouth guard does. Invisalign procedures may include attachments, or enamel-coloured ridges that stick to your teeth like braces brackets, says Anna Monette Roberts about her own experience with Invisalign.

Roberts wrote in an article for, “These attachments click into the Invisalign aligners to help the teeth move more effectively. Without the aligners in, the attachment bumps are virtually invisible. But with the aligners in, it looks like you have clear braces. My orthodontist warned me that I would have two attachments, but I ended up with 20. So, most of the day, I look like I’m wearing braces.”
