Home Remedies For A Mouth Abscess
Abscesses in the mouth are painful and distressing, so it’s beneficial to know some home remedies for a mouth abscess. They should, however, should be seen to be a dentist as soon as possible because they’re highly infectious and could be life-threatening.
The infections are caused by bacteria that sit in the gums or spaces between the teeth. Usually, the abscess consists of a pocket of pus that the dentist will need to examine to determine which type of abscess it is, as it is difficult to self-diagnose.
A dental abscess is the build-up of pus in the gums caused by an infection. It needs immediate medical treatment by a dentist. A dental abscess will not go away on its own.
The examination consists of x-rays, a thorough assessment, and your dentist will ask for a description of your pain and symptoms.
The three types of dental abscesses are:
- A periapical tooth abscess or endodontic abscess: Deep cavities caused by tooth decay result in an abscess near the tip of the tooth root.
- Gum periodontal abscess: Gum diseases lead to an abscess in the gum, which may eventually lead to bone loss.
- Combined abscess or combined periodontal-endodontic abscess: Abscesses in the gums and at the tooth root join forces to cause you excruciating pain and discomfort.
Strong antibiotics are usually prescribed to reduce pus and swelling. That isn’t the end. The dentist needs to do further work, which may take the form of a root canal or an extraction.
Symptoms
Pain and swelling usually indicates a gum abscess. When you bite or chew, the pain shoots up into your eye or down to the jaw and even further to the lungs.
Other indications are: a bad taste in the mouth, bleeding gums and pus, bad breath, a loose tooth, sensitivity in the teeth and gums, fever, and a receding gum line.
Abscesses are a result of plaque and tartar build-up that lead to gum diseases: some may be due to poor oral hygiene and periodontitis.
Or other risks include:
- Smoking,
- Diabetes,
- Obesity,

- Arthritis,
- Hepatitis C,
- Genetics,

- Compromised immunity such as HIV/AIDS; and
- Some cancers.
Treatment with home remedies
Treatment with home remedies is a short-term solution that clears the infection. But the dentist will still need to drain the abscess to prevent recurring infection.
Home Remedies include:
- Anti-inflammatory over-the-counter painkillers: These include ibuprofen, Tylenol, or aspirin. They can be taken three times a day for three days and are effective for all types of abscesses.
- Over-the-counter topical anaesthetic Benzocaine: The gel with brand names Orajel or Anbesol can be used on gum and tooth abscesses. The gel brings fast relief by numbing the affected area for a short time. The gel should be applied every two hours. It can’t be used for children under two years.
- Calming, antibacterial chamomile, and peppermint teas: Applying a wet teabag relieves pain for all abscesses. Peppermint tea, which contains eugenol, is a pain reliever.
- Essential oils such as clove, peppermint, oregano, or thyme oils: Use a few drops in a carrier oil like an almond or grapeseed oil. All essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil to prevent burns to the skin. Dip a cotton ball or a cotton swab in the mixture and hold the oil-dipped swab on the affected area for 3 – 5 minutes. Wait up to 10 -15 minutes and rinse with Himalayan pink salt water. Of these oils, clove is the most effective with pain relief for abscesses.
- Oil pulling with unrefined, cold-pressed coconut oil, black cumin oil, or black seed oil: Swirling a teaspoon of oil in your mouth for about 3 -5 minutes should reduce inflammation and plaque under the gums and relieve abscess pains. Spit the oil out into the bin. Oils down the drain cause blockages in the plumbing.
- Saltwater rinses can soothe pain caused by gum abscesses: With its anti-inflammatory properties and capacity for healing wounds, rinse 4-5 times with a tablespoon of pink Himalayan salt in lukewarm water. Gently swish to rinse. Baking soda / Bicarbonate of soda can be added to the Himalayan salt mixture and is effective in pain relief and reducing inflammation.
In conclusion, a cold press wrapped in a dishtowel held on the cheek for about 20 minutes is also effective in relieving inflammation and swelling caused by abscesses. Another pain reliever is sleeping on a wedge pillow. The elevation reduces the pain and helps you to sleep better.
