How to choose a dentist

How to choose a dentist

Choosing the right dentist for you isn’t just necessary, it is IMPERATIVE. There are pros and cons to finding your perfect dentist – maybe it is easy to pick a dentist down the road or someone that the neighbour recommended. Overall, the process of selecting a suitable dentist takes time.

The right dentist is someone you look for to stay with you for the long run – and to get to know you and your health. It isn’t a simple task, as there are many dental practitioners.

Your dentist is your partner in oral health. Poor oral care can bring up other health risks, including cardiovascular disease.

What is the best way to find the best dentist for you? Here are some tips.

Convenience is the key.

Having your dentist near where you live is not entirely what ‘convenience’ entails. According to Pat Crawford, DDS, your dentist is beneficial to close to your work and your children’s school.

The office hours of your next doctor must suit your family’s needs. Some dentists only schedule appointments that are within your working hours. Instead, seek a dentist who offers late hours in the week and some odd hours over the weekend.

Research, research, research!

Board certification of a potential dentist is crucial when making such an important decision. The certificate is an indication that the dentist is trained, skilled and experienced in general dentistry healthcare.

Take your research to the next level and determine whether they have a history of malpractice claims or disciplinary actions. Information, such as the medical school the dentist attended, their training hospital, certifications and other histories, is found online.

Does the dentist have experience?

Experience is imperative, especially when you have an oral health condition. A dentist with experience will likely provide better results for your condition or procedure.

Additional training for dental specialities is essential – such as orthodontics and endodontics. Don’t be scared to ask the dentist about their experience and how many patients they treated with the same condition as yours.

Anxiety is a natural feeling when you visit a new dentist. Ask the dentist about his approach to other anxious patients in your appointment. If you need a specific procedure, ask the dentist how many times he performed that procedure and if there were any complications.

Look at office technology.

A dentist doesn’t need to have the newest dental equipment, but the equipment needs to be up to date. Are they using a computer, or are they stuck in time with paper charts? Does the office smell and look clean? Is there proper technology to show the accuracy of what is happening in your mouth?

Many dental practitioners have intraoral cameras and digital x-rays. Is this the case with your potential physician, and is the dentist willing to go in-depth about the condition of your oral health?

Gender choices

The gender of your dentist can play a role in how comfortable you feel discussing personal information. A female does not have to choose a female dentist, and the same applies to a male, but some people think that selecting a dentist of your gender is a consideration in dental care.

Dentists are taking more time to mould their skills when it comes to caring for a man or a woman. Ask a dentist about their experience with working with different genders and how it will benefit you.

Telehealth capabilities

Telehealth is when dentists can diagnose and treat patients via telecommunications technology. It includes two-way videos, smartphones and email.

When you research a doctor, find out if they have telehealth services. The service doesn’t replace hands-on and in-person visits, but it does narrow down the number of trips you make to the dental office.

Having a telehealth appointment is essential when your symptoms are contagious and you can’t leave your home. The service is helpful for follow-up appointments and minor complaints.

Communication style

Be comfortable and open while conversing. The one you choose is supportive of your needs, and you can tell if this is possible during your first meeting.

How do they respond to your questions – are they welcoming to your inquiries? Are they attentive, or do you feel rushed when talking about your dental issue?

Your dental technician doesn’t only consider your oral care but shows an interest in the type of person you are, your treatment preferences, and respects your decisions.

Your instincts are trustworthy.

If someone is going to take care of your mouth, be sure that you are 100% comfortable with the dental office and its practitioner. If your gut says otherwise, instead, go with that instinct.

There will always be many dentists for you to research and to make the right decision for you.
